0801翻译: 芦花荡(孙犁) Translation: Reed Marshland (Sun Li) (translated by: alexcwlin; He was in charge of a wide range of duties which included transporting, supply-delivering, and cadre-escorting in and out of the reed-pond. All these were done without carrying a gun. He told comrades inside the reed pond: “You can count on me for anything, and I can rely on my skill in the water. I guarantee it.” The old man was excessively confident and proud of himself. Every night inside the blockaded water area tightly sealed off by enemies, he acted as if nothing was in the way. He continued to scull his boat in a leisurely mood like an early-rise-and-late-return fisherman, and followed a planned routine that pleased his own self and others. Because of him, the enemies’ desired results from their maneuver were not achieved. Every evening, singing which came out from the reed pond was still very loud which did not sound like it came from starved people. The sweet aroma of cooked rice and meaty fish continued to drift out from the reed-pond. The enemies were getting anxious. One night the old man came back from a faraway place in the east. The crescent moon was floating in the water-like sky. He carried back two little girls who, having gone through crossfire for over a month, had both contracted malaria. They came to look up our army here yesterday. Their plan was to rest up and take a few needles in the reed pond. The old man was very fond of these two children. Their names were Big Ling for the older sister and Second Ling for the younger one. After taking them into his boat, he told them to go to sleep. He said: “Nothing will go wrong and you could take a good sleep. When we arrive inside the reed pond, we could have rice and fish to eat.” The children did not have a moment of peace amidst all the shooting during all these times. They were extremely nervous, and a tiny noise would trigger their closed eyes to open. Now that they had come to such a refreshing place with the boat rocking gently in water, their long-feverish faces felt invigorated in evening breeze. But that made them harder to fall asleep. The environment in front of the two girls was like a dream. In the last little while, they struggled through gunfire and got rained on throughout many nights in sorghum fields. In one night they had to walk past a few highways and crawled across several ditches. They did not stop going even when they were feverish and shivery. The only thing in their mind was to reach the army and then everything would be fine. These two girls were from Central Hebei. The older one was less than fifteen and the younger one was just thirteen. Marching on their hometown road, their eyes were gazing at the Big Dipper at the edge of the sky. They watched as early-summer wheat ripened to golden color and mid-autumn sorghum matured into bugled grains. Southbound geese flew over their heads, and before long those birds returned to the north. They had matured to become adults. The younger girl leaned over the side of the boat on her stomach and rinsed her two little hands playfully. Her feverish hands felt good soaking in cool water. Casually she scooped up some water and splashed it on her own face that was masked with a thick layer of dirt and sweat. She washed herself, including her short hair, to her heart’s delight. The older girl scolded her with a soft voice: “Look, what’s the matter with you washing your face at this time? Do you know what a critical time it is now? It’s not the right time to care about how clean you look.” The little girl looked up at the old man and said with a smile: “I feel energized with a wash.” The old man said: “Don’t worry. 洗一洗吧, Take a wash. What a handsome-looking child!” From distance, a square of dim, yellow light suddenly shone on their boat. The little girl who was wringing her wet hair let out a scream (2). The old man said: “Don’t be afraid. It is the search light from the little steamer. They could not shine on us.” He squatted down and sculled the boat to go around from the north. The yellow light was still searching all over. One moment it landed on water surface and another moment it shone to the faraway forest. The old man said with a low voice: “Don’t speak. We are going to pass the blockade line.” The small boat noiselessly but speedily moved forward. When the small boat and the dark little steamer were paralleled in a straight line, the searchlight suddenly locked on them. The two little girls’ faces turned white under the light and then a hail of machine gun bullets were sprayed at them. The old man shouted: “Lie down”. Then he jumped into the pond and pushed the little boat forward treading on water. The big girl held the little girl in her arms. She shielded her with her body and both of them fell to the bottom of the boat. Bullets screamed past the side of their boat and drilled into the pond. Some shots exploded as they hit water. The big girl was wounded, and even so she did not make a peep. But her arms lost strength and had to let go the little one. She fell down. The younger girl felt a stream of hot liquid dripped on her face. She quickly struggled up and held her big sister in her arms. Then she shouted to the old man in tears: “She is wounded.” The old man did not hear. He continued to push with all his might and said softly: “Don’t be afraid. He cannot hit us.” “She is bleeding.” “Who?” The old man jumped up and the boat violently tilted to one side. Suddenly he felt his limbs lost strength and he clang on to the back of the boat with his hands. He floated forward a few steps and then pushed onwards with all his power. They were very close to the reed pond. The old man crawled up to the boat and he felt a bit tipsy. But at the end he used the scull to push aside the layer of reeds outside and found the narrow entrance. Once they squeezed their way into the reed-pond, he put down the scull and propped up the older girl’s head. The big girl opened her eyes slightly and struggled to say: “Don’t worry about me. Take me inside the reed-pond quickly.” The old man collapsed and sat down. The boat stayed still where it was. The moon had set and wind could be heard whooshing in the reed pond after midnight. He let out a sigh and stayed motionless for a long while before speaking: “I cannot take you inside.” The little girl asked with her eyes wide opened: “Why is that?” The old man looked straight ahead into blank space and said: “I’m too ashamed to see anybody.” The little girl was a bit anxious. On the road they also ran into similar people who took them along at the beginning. Then those people dumped them halfway and made things difficult for them. She pleaded to the old man: “Pop, take us inside quick. You can see she has lost a lot of blood and we need to find a doctor to patch her wound.” The old man stood up, picked up the scull and made a push forward. The small boat twisted and turned towards the depth of the reed-pond. At that time the wounded girl started to mourn in pain. In consoling her, the younger girl seemed to be complaining that even though situation was tense on the road, nothing went wrong. On the contrary when they reached here, unfortunate thing happened. Her words were like a hail of arrows that pierced the old man’s heart. There was no way he could explain himself. In many places, he had experienced different tough situations, but why couldn’t he carry out the assignment this time around? He didn’t have any daughter, and these two girls were very lovable. For a person who had been making tall talks routinely, what was he going to say in bringing an injured person inside? Was he going to be thick-skinned about that? He spoke to Big Ling: “They shot you and cause you to lose so much blood. Wait till tomorrow, and I will make ten of them bleed in return.” The two children did not respond, and the old man felt dissed. He said: “If you don’t believe what I just said, I can’t say anything more. Who told me to slip up and embarrass myself? 可是,等到天明, Just wait until tomorrow. Stick around and watch me.” The little girl said: “You are very old and can you still fight?” The old man said vehemently: “Why not? I could beat them without using gun because that’s not what I am good at. If you are prepared to watch, come with me tomorrow. Second Ling, you follow me tomorrow to watch. It’s going to be exciting.” The next day at lunchtime, the weather was sweltering. The red sun was shining brightly in the sky and a layer of mist was hovering over the water. The little steamer was positioned further away from the reed pond. The devilish soldiers sneaked off to take bath. Ten and then some of them were swimming in the water, and those Japanese were good swimmers. Not a soul could be seen in the shallow water. A flock of water fowls that looked like a cluster of white fabrics flew north to avoid those devils and landed underneath big lotus leaves to keep cool. Emerging from the shallow lotus pool was a small boat. A skinny old man wearing a pair of torn shorts was standing at the stern of the watercraft. He was applying the scull intermittently. His two hands were busy peeling seeds from a bulged lotus seedpod and throwing them into his mouth one by one. There was a big bundle of lotus seedpods at the front of his boat which were freshly picked from the lotus pool. How else could anyone taste such fresh produce unless he came to Baiyang Lake? Those devils had arrived at Baiyang Lake for several days and they had been gazing desirously at those lotuses in shallow water. They yelled towards the small boat and ordered the boatman to come over. The old man took a glance at them and looked down. He continued to scull intermittently and peel lotus seedpod, but the boat moved slowly forward towards their direction. When the boat was a stone’s throw (1) from those devils, it seemed the old man then discovered those taking bath were devilish soldiers. With a stroke of the scull, the small boat smoothly turned around to head back. The devils were splashing water in trying to catch up to him. The old man looked panicky but the boat had difficulties moving forward. The devils were following closely behind him and catching up. Ahead of the boat were several deadwood stakes buried in water, and as time passed, nobody could remember why those stakes were there in the first place. The water was unruffled as a mirror and clear as the blue sky. Elongated aqua-weeds were wavering at the bottom of the water. The devils caught up to him and was about to climb aboard the boat. At a stroke of the scull, the little boat went around those enemy soldiers like whirlwind and the sweet aroma of lotus seedpods brushed by the tips of their noses. Frantically the devils were twirling and grabbing as if they were playing hide-and-seek with the old man. A devil screamed out loud and squatted into the water as if he took a sharp bite from something. It was a sharp hook that pierced through his leg. The other devils were shocked and scattered in all directions, but the calves of each of them were caught by hooks. They struggled in an attempt to get free from the poison-snake-like hooks. Those hooks, which came to revenge for the girl, found their ways to the legs of the devils. In some cases there were even two or three hooks to one person. The devils were screaming in pain and staying still. The old man sculled the boat to their sides, raised the pole and smashed at the devils’ heads as if they were hard-to-crack aged corns. He struck with all his might. In looking at the reed-pond, the tender reed flowers were like a stretch of purple velvet scattering all over in the wind. A little girl was at the edge of the reed pond underneath reed flowers. She was hiding behind dense growth of reed leaves and watching this heroic act. (1) A Stone’s Throw Surprisingly “distance of arrow shot”—the straight translation of “一箭之地”, actually exists in English, but mostly in ancient literature to describe a fairly short distance. In modern days, the more commonly used expression to describe a fairly close distance is “a stone’s throw”. Notice that despite under normal grammar rule that an inanimate object, such as “stone”, is not allowed a possessive form, i.e., “stone’s”, an idiom such as “a stone’s throw” is exempted and so “a stone’s throw” is a grammatically correct expression through common use. (2) “Who” or “That” Originally the sentence “The little girl who was wringing her wet hair let out a scream” was written as “The little girl that was wringing her wet hair let out a scream”. Always use “who” as the Relative Pronoun associated with a person, not “that”.
